I am an Interior Design Seamstress with a degree in Communications ( Film & Video), but my passion has become Fabric Collage. All of my years of sewing have given me an extensive exposure to interesting fabrics and textures begging to be used in other creative ways. My education and interest in Film and Video has taught me the art of framing what I see or want to see in a frame.
Using fabric in this unique way of layering hundreds and even thousands of snippets to create an image is a most intriguing occupation. The challenge of finding fabrics to represent each line, color or shadow of an image is truly exhilarating. The purist in me refuses to use markers or inks or any other such instrument on the artwork itself to draw line or shape. I use only fabric. However, I do on occasion paint or dye or "stain" fabrics before using them in my artwork to get the desired hue.
For the past several years I have been trying to juggle my interior design sewing business and my true love ~ Fabric Collage. I guess I have the best of both worlds since the word "artist" is often associated with starving. If fabric collage is never more than a hobby for me I am content to do what I love.
" I've never really had a hobby, unless you count art, which the IRS once told me I had to declare as a hobby since I hadn't made money with it. "
~Laurie Anderson - performance artist - Laurie Anderson
I hope that won't always be the case for artists in general and me in particular. I only know that now I seem to have crossed that line between hobbyist and artist. I can no longer pass a row of fabrics on their neatly folded bolts without seeing part of a face, hair, leaves on a tree, water or any number of things. Seeing things in a whole new light is not a bad thing........ especially at my age.
